The settlement of the French administrative system and fast spreading a modern consumerist culture lead Light Inc to explore the Guianese context under the perspective of human dignity for the Bushinengue, a major ethnic group of French Guiana but whose needs and rights are not taken into account by the government. Work undertaken is threefold:

– A photographic documentary to point at injustices and testify about the rich culture of Bushinengue people.

– A socio-anthropological study to understand the complex context of French Guiana and explore the decolonisation perspective.

– Exhibitions and discussions in high schools and universities.

The project was achieved after ten weeks in the cities of Saint Laurent, Apatou, Sinnamary and campous (villages) of the Maroni. The Light Inc team learned Nengue Tongo in order to perform interviews and lived closely to the main stakeholders, students, parents, community leaders and activists. A thorough reflection on the social and economic dynamics of the area was performed with the help of Mama Bobi, one of the main NGOs on location.

ACTORS

Light Inc. initiated the research, photographic documentary, the report and the activities in Europe.
